Marketing to international patients means making sure people abroad, and foreigners living in Thailand, find, trust and choose your hospital. It takes multilingual online marketing, work with agents and overseas insurers, and care that starts before the patient travels and continues after they fly home.
According to ttb analytics (July 2026), international patients made up about 16.8% of Thai private hospital revenue in 2025, and that revenue grew 8.5% a year over the past three years, against 1.3% for Thai patients. For hospitals facing a slow domestic market, this is the clearest route to growth. It is also competitive and needs more preparation.
Thailand’s international patient market today
| Group | Examples | How they choose a hospital |
|---|---|---|
| Travelling specifically for treatment | The Middle East, neighbouring countries, China and South Asia | Online search, AI, agents, or schemes approved by their government or insurer |
| Foreigners living or working in Thailand | Employees of foreign companies and their families | Group insurance, HR, Google and recommendations from friends |
| Tourists using services while visiting | Health checks, dental care, aesthetics | Phone search nearby, maps and reviews |
The mix moves fast. A mid-sized Bangkok hospital said in 2024 that Middle Eastern patients had become its largest international group, ahead of Myanmar and China, whereas neighbouring countries and Japan used to lead. In 2024 Kuwait was also reported to be preparing a list of Thai hospitals where its citizens can claim treatment costs; policies like this limit patients to listed hospitals, so watch target countries’ policies closely.
Compete on expertise, not price
Lower prices than at home are why patients start looking at Thailand, but not why they pick one hospital over another, because many Thai hospitals are priced similarly. ttb analytics recommends building niche medical tourism where Thailand is strong, such as fertility, cosmetic and gender-affirming surgery, rehabilitation for older people and long-stay wellness, which reduces direct price comparison and builds pricing power from expertise.
- Pick services that are genuinely strong: doctors, technology and outcomes you can explain, plus spare capacity
- Pick countries that need those services and can reach Thailand easily
- Understand how patients from that country pay: self-pay, overseas insurance, or a government-approved scheme, because each needs different marketing
- Start with one to three countries and complete every step in that language before expanding
Where international patients look for hospitals
| Channel | What you need |
|---|---|
| Google in the patient’s language | Pages per service in the target language with starting price, doctors, length of stay in Thailand and the process |
| AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Gemini | Clear, consistent facts across your site and platforms so AI can recommend you |
| Google Maps and reviews | Complete profiles and reviews from international patients in their own language |
| Agents and treatment coordinators | Clear contracts on fees, standards of care and lawful handling of patient data |
| Overseas insurers and government bodies | Direct billing, hospital accreditation and a team that can handle eligibility |
| LINE, WhatsApp, WeChat and each country’s social media | A team or system that replies in that language, in that country’s working hours |
International patients often contact several hospitals at once and send reports or scans for an assessment before deciding. Hospitals that reply quickly in the patient’s language with a clear estimate and outline treatment plan usually win the case.
What to have ready before you market
| Area | Have ready |
|---|---|
| Language | Web pages, price sheets, consent forms, and interpreters or coordinators in the target language |
| Price and payment | Package estimates, conditions for extra costs, and international payment |
| Travel and stay | How long patients need to stay, letters for visa applications, and nearby accommodation |
| Care after going home | Remote follow-up, handover to the patient’s home doctor, and a contact for problems |
| Personal data | Receiving and sharing health data lawfully under Thailand’s PDPA and the home country’s law |
| Advertising law | Every ad in every language needs approval first; see our hospital advertising rules guide |
Measuring international patient marketing
- Assessment requests per month, by country and service
- First response time in the patient’s language, and time to send an estimate
- Share of requests that become patients who travel
- Revenue per case, and the share of cases with costs above the estimate
- Review scores from international patients and referrals
Frequently asked questions
How much revenue do international patients bring Thai private hospitals?
According to ttb analytics, international patients made up about 16.8% of Thai private hospital revenue in 2025, and that revenue grew 8.5% a year over the past three years, against 1.3% for Thai patients.
Where do most international patients in Thailand come from?
It depends on the hospital and service. Important groups include the Middle East, neighbouring countries, China, Japan and South Asia. One mid-sized Bangkok hospital said in 2024 that Middle Eastern patients had become its largest group, followed by Myanmar and China. Use your own patient data to choose markets.
Can a mid-sized hospital market to international patients?
Yes, if it keeps the focus narrow: two or three genuinely strong services and one to three countries, with web pages, chat replies and patient care in that language, rather than trying every market at once.
Do foreign-language hospital ads in Thailand need approval?
Yes. Ads for private healthcare facilities need approval before publication under section 38 of the Sanatorium Act, whatever the language, and must also follow advertising law in the countries they reach.
Should we work with international patient agents?
Agents help reach countries where the hospital is not yet known, but contracts should be clear on fees, standards of care and how patient data is passed on. Build your own direct channels alongside them, such as pages in the target language and reviews, so you do not depend on agents entirely.
